John 6:41-59
Life Group Questions:
1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas that you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?
2. What do you notice in the dialogue between Jesus and the crowd in the following verses of John 6:25-26, 30-32, 42-43, 52-53? What was the attitude of the crowd in each scenario, and what was the tone of Jesus’ response to their questions? Do you find yourself much like the crowd questioning Jesus?
3. It seems the crowd was looking for “signs” to show them that Jesus was the promised messiah. What were some of the signs Jesus had already shown them? Why do you think these signs were not enough for the crowd? It seems as though seeking Jesus would be a good thing, why were these people seeking Him according to verse 26? Have you ever found yourself seeking Jesus for the wrong reasons?
4. In this sermon Jesus continues to say that He is the “Bread of Life” (Vss. 32,33,35,38,41,48,50,51,58) come down from heaven. Discuss this idea, how is He the “Bread of Life” and for what reason did He come down?
5. Many people are looking for satisfaction in this life (food, relationships, job, status, possessions, kids, etc.). What are some things that bring you satisfaction (and please don’t give the Sunday school answer – “Jesus”)? How do these things compare to the key thought in Sunday’s sermon, “Only Jesus can give you true satisfaction”? Discuss.
6. What promises does Jesus give in vss. 44, 47, 58? What is the criteria for receiving these promises? Do you find yourself to be like the crowd at times, struggling to “believe” in some of the principles that the scriptures teach? Discuss.
7. Why do you think the crowd struggled so much with the thought of feeding on Jesus’ flesh and drinking His blood (c.f. Leviticus 17:10-14)? What did Jesus mean by using this metaphor about feeding of His flesh and drinking His blood (c.f. Galatians 2:20)? Jesus seems to sum up the thought of His statement “I am the Bread of Life” in vs. 58, “whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” What promise does this give to us?
