Life Group Questions:

1.    If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas that you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?

2.    Describe the meaning of Christian freedom. Does being free mean that Christians have the right to do anything they wish? In what way are we free and yet limited? How does the world’s idea of freedom differ from God’s?

3.    According to John 8:31 Jesus was speaking to those Jews who believed Him. If these individuals believed Jesus then how is it that He could claim that their father was the devil (cf. John 8:44)? Are their different levels or degrees of believing Christ? Explain.

4.    What does it mean to be a true disciple of Christ? How can you tell if somebody is really a disciple of Christ (cf. John 5:38; 6:56; 13:35; 15:8; 1 John 1:6, 8; 2:4-11)? Would you describe yourself as a true disciple of Christ? Why or why not?

5.    Do you agree with the statement that, “True freedom is found in Christ alone”? Read the following passages and state at least four observations: Isaiah 61;1-2; Colossians 2:13-15; Hebrews 2:14-16; Romans 8:1-4; Acts 4:12. For what reason has Christ freed us? How should our freedom in Christ impact the way we think and act?

6.    Read 2 Samuel 7:12-17 and 1 Chronicles 17:11-14. Compare and contrast these two passages. In what ways are these passages similar and different? What is the significance of 1 Chronicles being the last book of the Old Testament (Hebrew version) and containing this rendering (intertextuality) of 2 Samuel 7?

7.    Why do you think Jesus uses the designation “Son” in John 8:35-36 as apposed to maybe God, Lord, Christ, or Savior? What is the significance of the title “Son”? What thoughts should come to mind with the mention of the word “Son” like this?

8.    Read Romans 6:1-11. In what way are Christians dead to sin? Does being dead to sin mean that sin no longer has any affect on us? Explain. List at least three encouraging statements by the Apostle Paul in this passage.
