John 8:37-47

1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas that you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?
2. Why do you think that Abraham is such a central figure in the Scriptures (cf. Genesis 12;15;17; Romans 4; Galatians 3; Hebrews 11)? What are some things that the character Abraham represents theologically? Compare and contrast Abraham and Moses.
3. What does it mean to be a child of Abraham? Can somebody technically be considered a child of Abraham if they are not of Jewish descent (cf. Romans 2:28-29)? Explain that idea further. How are true believers related to Abraham?
4. Jesus mentions the idea of Abraham’s deeds. What were some of the deeds of Abraham that demonstrated his relationship with God? How was it that Abraham kept the commandments and laws of God if he lived and died before the giving of those things (cf. Genesis 26:1-5)? Are people today called to obey the law of God? Explain.
5. How did Abraham become righteous (cf. Genesis 15:6)? What does it mean that God “reckoned” righteousness to Abraham? How do people today receive righteousness and receive the status of righteous?
6. Look through our passage and list at least four ways in which children of God and children of the devil differ. Do you think it can be said of people today that satan is their father? Why or why not? Describe some traits of satan listed in our passage.
7. Describe the difference between the way the world and true Christians view the word of God. What does it mean to hear the word of God and how do we know that the word is speaking to us? What impact does the word of God have upon true believers? Read back through John and make at least two observations about hearing the word of God and the voice of God.
8. What does it mean to love God (cf. John 14:21; Matthew 10:37; John 21:15)? From where does love for God come; what is the source? Would you describe yourself as one who loves God? Why or why not? What are some ways in which you need to grow in your love for God? How can you love God more?
