Life Group Questions

1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas that you gathered from the sermon? Do you have any questions?

2. Describe a time when you felt helpless, and somebody came to your aid. What is significant about God being the Helper of the helpless (cf. Psalm 72:12)? Describe some ways we can help the helpless as individuals and a church.

3. Look at the following Scriptures and describe what it means to have God as our Helper: Psalm 54:4; 94:17; 118:7; 121:1. What kind of help does the Holy Spirit give to those who are followers of God (cf. John 14)? List some benefits of having the Lord as our Helper (cf. Hebrews 13:5-6).

4. Does describing God as a mighty warrior conflict with the common perceptions about God (cf. Exodus 15:1-3)? What does it mean that God fights for His people (cf. Deuteronomy 1:29-31)? Have you ever felt a time in your life when God fought for you? Explain.

5. Read Revelation 17:1-14; 19:11-16. Describe some ways in which Christ’s victory is far superior to that of Saul’s or any other earthly king. How should the sure victory of Christ encourage us in this life and the next to come?

6. Why do you think Saul stood up for those who had previously been against him (cf. 12-13)? Why is celebration such a vital part of the Christian life (cf. Psalm 118)? Describe some things about God that are worthy of celebration.

7. Elaborate on some of the key points presented by the writer in 1 Samuel 11, such as the people of Jabesh feeling helpless, Saul being controlled by the Spirit of God (cf. Judges 13), Saul and Samuel being mentioned as a pair, Judah being singled out as a tribe for the first time in Samuel, and the renewal of the kingdom of God.
